Longshoreman of the Apocalypse Nominated for a Hugo
Schlock Mercenary: The Longshoreman of the Apocalypse has been nominated for a Hugo Award in the "Best Graphic Story" category. Other nominated titles include the excellent Girl Genius Volume 9, Fables Vol. 12, Captain Britain and MI13 Volume 3, and Batman: Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader. Please peruse the full list of nominees for all of this year's Hugos, as there's lots of good stuff there.
I'm thrilled to have been nominated, and I'm honored to be in the company of creators like Phil and Kaja Foglio, Mark Buckingham, Paul Cornell, Andy Kubert, and Neil Gaiman. I get a little nervous when I see all the skilled and talented people who were involved in creating some of those other nominated books and projects. I'm standing alongside years of carefully refined arts, and Longshoreman, while arguably the best thing I've ever done, is still an attempt to compromise quality for speed while hoping nobody notices. It makes me wish I'd brought Travis Walton on board two years ago.
If you're a voting member of the World Science Fiction Convention and would like to read Longshoreman there will be a full Hugo Reader packet soon with a downloadable PDF. In the meantime, you can find the whole thing here in the Schlock Mercenary archives.
I should point out that I'm now planning to go to Australia for WorldCon. I don't have details yet, but I need to be there, if only so that I can collect my Hugo Nominee pin and have matching rockets on the collar of my tux.
